Shoppng in Beijing
The metropolis of Beijing has several shopping districts offering a mind-boggling variety of goods. The traditional shopping districts have been always Wangfujing Street, Qianmen Street, Dongdan and Xidan Commercial Street, but now it seems that Jianguomen Outer Street and Chaowai Street have risen to the top for the latest and most luxurious items. Shopping at outdoor markets remains a not-to-be-missed experience for foreign travelers. Check out the Panjiayuan Collection Street, Xiushui Street and Liulichang Street for local specialties such as cloisonné, ivory carvings, jade pieces, lacquer carvings, antiques and fresh water pearls.
1. Liulichang Culture Street
Liulichang Culture Street, a few minutes’ walk from the south of Hepingmen Subway Station, is a great place for shopping in terms of both variety and atmosphere. Shops are open from 9am to 6pm. The street is thought to have originated in the Qing Dynasty, which is evidenced by the ancient wooden architecture lining both sides of the street. Products sold here include jewelry, antiques, ancient calligraphy and paintings. Enjoy the pleasure of bargaining when you decide to buy something.
2. Xidan Shopping Area
Beijing Xidan Shopping Centre is located in the bustling Xidan commercial street, a famous centre with 70 years of history. This market covers a range of price levels by providing middle and high quality commodities. Many new shops like Xidan Shopping Center, Xidan Bazaar, Chung-Yo Department Store, Huanan Mansion have recently been established. Many world famous name-brand products are available which reflects Beijing’s growing cosmopolitan presence. They make Xidan a paradise for shoppers.
3. Panjiayuan Collectors Market
Panjiayuan Market is an open-air market selling old arts and crafts. It is reputed that marketers from twenty-four provinces come here to sell their wares. Over four thousand stalls offer abundant old merchandise, including old books published during the Culture Revolution, jade bracelets, ancient furniture, hand-made porcelain, calligraphy, paintings and Cultural Revolution propaganda posters. All the things you can imagine and many things you can’t imagine are available. However, most of the things on offer are fakes.
4. Beijing Curio City
Beijing Curio City – a representation of Beijing culture. Opening 1995 and covering 26,200 square meters with 600 stores, they sell mainly old and antique furniture, clocks, carpets, ceramics, calligraphy, paintings, white ivory, White Jade, crystal jewelry, Shoushan stone carving, Snuff Bottles, old carpet, bronze statues, old clocks, ancient ceramic porcelain, Tibetan artifacts and most anything you can imagine. 5. Silver street
The 2.7 Klm long Silver Street is located in Dongdan Beidajie. The number of shops in Silver Street seems countless. The range includes clothing stores, jewelry stores, household goods stores, beverage stores, bakeries, restaurants of different kids, cinemas, hair salons and wedding photo studio and many more. Each is different in some respect. It is a pleasure just walk down the street to window shop. Stone by Stone $11.18 Although there are some albums that you can get a feel for instantly, there are others that one never truly gets a handle on. Such is the case with Floater and this recording. A song such as “An Apology” sounds as if it was pick-pocketed from a group like Incubus and Live, a guitar-driven tune that still has a flair for the theatrical at times. After a bit of meandering, it then heaves itself headlong into a lean, meaty, hard rock tune in the vein of Nickelback or Audioslave. This same tone is taken to greater heights with the raunchy “Proviso” that brings to mind a tamer Rage Against the Machine. From there, the group weave an ambient keyboard into a slow, plodding arrangement during “Ghost in the Making” that sways along effortlessly. Floater can’t be pigeonholed easily, especially when they change gears yet again for a mid-tempo, safe but somewhat stale “In America” that is salvaged only by lead singer’s Robert Wynia’s passionate delivery. Fortunately, they redeem themselves with the finely tuned and Police-like “Weightless” that they downplay for some fantastic results. The rhythm section of drummer Pete Cornett and Wynia shines here. Just as solid is the ensuing “Breakdown” that has some U2 hues to it despite the rather lame chorus section that is quite disappointing. Just as ordinary is “Spaces in Between Us” that doesn’t have much going for it. Things improve with “Everything Falls Our Way” which again touches on a radio-friendly hard rock blueprint for its success. Fortunately, Stone by Stone closes on a high note, with the bombastic “Home in the Sky” that is a slow, beefy homage to classic British heavy metal. ~ Jason MacNeil, Rovi Performers: David Amador – Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Acoustic); Peter Cornett – Electronics, Drums, Percussion; Robert Wynia – Sampling, Bass, Keyboards, Vocals; Sergey – Vocals; The Fiftieth Street Choir – Vocals |
