Tanzanite Rings – A Rare Beauty
Gemstones, semi-precious or precious, have always attracted people’s attention from all parts of the world. Several types of gemstones are available in today’s market. Tanzanite is one amongst them. This beautiful, rare blue gem has a purple hint and is very popular all over the world, especially in the United States. It was originally known as Blue Zoisite, and was renamed Tanzanite in October of 1968 by Tiffany & Company.
A new gem to the world, Tanzanite rings and bracelets have attained a fine and remarkable reputation of being a highly demanded precious jewelry for engagements and weddings across countries.
Tips to Select
-
The most popular color of this rare gem is the one with deep blue and purple hues at the edges. Ensure that you are visiting a reputable jeweler to buy Tanzanite rings. Some jewelers may substitute a less expensive gemstone for the real one. This rare gem is not easy to find, however, you must find a descent one online.
-
Consider all the factors. This rare blue gem in its original form is basically brownish or gray in color. If possible, look for loose gemstones and place them into a structure of your choice. Since it is a soft stone, it can get damaged easily, hence, if the gem that you chose already has cracks in it, the chances that gemstone is going to break increases. Because this rare blue gem is mined only in Tanzania, it is possibly one of the most expensive gems to consider for a ring.
-
Take good care of your precious Tanzanite rings. Since it is a soft gem, you have to give a little more consideration while taking care. Never place Tanzanite rings in ultrasonic cleaner because it may get damaged beyond repair. To avoid damage while not being worn, it is advised to place it away from other pieces of jewelry to prevent damaging it accidentally.
All Styles and Shapes
From split shanks to solitaire stones, from multi-gem rings to fancy cuts such as pear, oval, etc. the collection offers all types of solutions to customers. Sophisticated designs such as oval shaped Tanzanite are also quite popular these days.
As a gem, this precious stone is also available in the form of earrings and necklaces. The Jewel Site offers online customers with pleasurable shopping experience, and has an amazing collection of great jewelry products. Visit their website today to learn more about Tanzanite Ring.

Hot & Rare $15.98 This set of ‘hot dance’ music (orchestras mostly from the late 1920′s playing jazz-influenced dance band arrangements) differs from the previous releases put out by the Diamond Cut label in that the selections are not taken from the Edison catalog but from the libraries of two record collectors. The 24 numbers feature a wide variety of groups (from 1926-30 with a number apiece from 1932 and 1935). Best-known of the bands are Ted Weems Orchestra (heard on a classic rendition of “What a Day”), Charlie Johnson’s Paradise Ten (“You Ain’t the One”), Jean Goldkette (“My Pretty Girl” by a band that includes Bix Beiderbecke and Joe Venuti) and the Carleton Coon-Joe Sanders Nighthawks (“Darktown Strutters Ball”). Although much of the music (as played by the Bluebirds, Blue Steele, the Wanderers, the High Hatters, Al Lentz, Roane’s Pennsylvanians, Mal Hallett, Jacques Renard, Adrian Schubert, Harold Austin’s New Yorkers, the Six Jumping Jacks, Earl Gresh’s Gang Planks, Phil Baxter, and the Broadway Nitelites) is quite obscure, the performances are well-recorded and consistently enjoyable. There are lots of short solos, the obligatory vocals are mostly easy-to-take (Vaughan DeLeath is memorable on “I Wanna Be Loved by You”) and the ensembles tend to be quite hot (as opposed to sweet). Many of the titles have not been available in a very long time (some not since the original 78 was released), so even though complete recording sessions are not reissued, this is a CD that 1920s collectors will want to go out of their way to obtain. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi Performers: Frank Luther – Vocals; Irving Kaufman – Vocals; Kenny Sargent – Vocals; Knocky Parker – Piano; Parker Gibbs – Vocals; Phil Baxter – Vocals; Tom Stacks – Vocals; Vaughn DeLeath – Vocals |

New Live & Rare:Live in Europe 1969-71 $47.99 Deluxe double colored vinyl LP pressing in gatefold sleeve of this collection of various one-off live tracks. All the material on this release comes from the classic second Deep Purple line up of Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord and Paice, who recorded the band’s most famous trio of albums; Deep Purple In Rock, Fireball and Machine Head. Despite their success on stage little material from the band’s live shows was ever released at the time, despite this being the area where the group made their name. The tracks span the years 1969 to 1971 and include several unique performances. Darker Than Blue. |

California Funk: Rare Funk 45s From the Golden State $19.98 With 21 slabs of pure, joyous funk complete with huge drums, blistering horn charts, pulsing basslines, stacks of wah-wah fuzz guitars, and enough energy and rhythm to rearrange the stratosphere, this delightful set of rare and independent California funk releases from the late ’60s and early ’70s is as much a nonstop dance party as it is an affirming revelation. It never stops grooving — from the opener, Water Color’s “All Bundled into One,” a release so rare only one copy is known to exist, to the closer, a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” by Mr. Clean & the Soul Inc., this is one powerful document. None of these sides was a national hit, and most didn’t even crack the local airwaves, but it’s not because they lack quality. There is so much to marvel at here, including the above-mentioned tracks as well as Arthur Monday’s thundering and slightly spooky “What Goes Around Comes Around” and the charging horns and percolating guitar of J.G.D. & the New Breed’s “North Richmond Breakaway.” It’s joyous funk as deep as the ocean is blue. You can’t go wrong with this one. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi |

The Electric Asylum, Vol. 5: Rare British Freakrock $14.38 The folks at Past & Present dropped the words “acid” or “psychedelic” from the subtitle of the fifth installment in their Electric Asylum series, and with good reason — while most of these twenty tracks are truly eccentric, these isn’t much here that sounds at all lysergic. Instead, this disc focuses on UK hard rock, glam rock, early progressive rock, and a few tunes that defy convenient generic classification. Tracey Dean’s “Boy On The Ball” might have been new wave if it had a harder guitar line and had been released in 1978 instead of 1974 (Dean’s voice has the most furious quaver ever captured on tape), and the oddball spoken work track that’s tagged onto track 13 takes the product of a freshman poetry seminar and runs it through enough studio trickery to make it sound like the voice of a cut-rate God. Elsewhere, the medley of “Gimmie Gimmie Good Loving” and “Gimmie Some Loving” by Biggles is hard stomping proto-glam, Hector could be the Bay City Rollers’ next door neighbors on “Ain’t Got Time,” “The Obeah Man” from Iron Horse generates some impressive hoodoo groove, Matchbox’s “Rod” is a boogie-flavored pop rocker overloaded with echo and curious synthesizer squealings, Slow Dog’s “Walking Through The Blue Grass” suggests T. Rex on cough syrup, Mustard’s “Good Time Comin’” is a brilliantly sludgy hard rock track, Now revel in some sweet guitar distortion on “I Wanna Be Free,” and one can’t help but wonder if Devo ever heard “Yeah!!” by Jets, which anticipates the sound of their Freedom Of Choice album without the socio-political angles. Even the lesser tracks are enjoyably curious in the manner of the best British rock of the mid-1970s, and this is compelling in a way the more psych-oriented volumes in this series were not (if only because this stuff hasn’t been anthologized with the same alacrity as freakbeat). The Electric Asylum Vol. 5 is weird and wild fun — lace up your paisley boots and check it out. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

The Bootleg Series, Vols. 1-3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961-1991 $31.98 This three-disc box set is what Dylanphiles have been waiting for, sitting patiently for years, even decades. And, even after its 1991 release, it retains the feeling of being a special, shared secret among the hardcore, since — no matter the acclaim — it’s the kind of record that only the hardcore will seek out. Of course, the great irony is that even casual Dylan fans will find much to treasure in this three-disc set of unreleased material. They’ll find songs as good as anything that made the records (sometimes surpassing the official releases, especially on the last disc), plus alternate versions (including original versions of songs on Blood on the Tracks) and long-fabled songs, from the incomplete “She’s Your Lover Now” to songs cut from The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan. This doesn’t just function as an alternate history of Dylan, but as an expansion of Dylan’s history, enriching what is already known about the greatest songwriter of his era — after all, every song here would qualify as the best song on anybody else’s album. And that’s no exaggeration. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Cyril Neville – Talking Drum; Ben Keith – Pedal Steel; Carolyn Dennis – Vocals (Background); Clydie King – Vocals (Background); David Mansfield – Mandolin; Emmylou Harris – Vocals (Background); Full Force – Vocals (Background); Gary Burke – Conga; Jennifer Warnes – Vocals (Background); Regina Havis – Vocals (Background); Sugar Blue – Harmonica; Al Gorgone – Guitar; Al Gorgoni – Guitar; Al Kooper – Organ; Alan Clark – Keyboards, Organ; Barry Beckett – Keyboards; Barry Kornfeld – Guitar; |

Hot Flashes: Rare High Quality Short Lived Bands $12.78 Vintage Musical Productions does it again! Hot Flashes: Rare High Quality Short Lived Bands features the now-underground jazz of the 1920s and ’30s. The tunes collected here are mostly by acts that cut only a couple of sides and disappeared into the ether of musical history. The only exception is the KXYZ Novelty Band who cut six of the sides here. The compelling thing about them is that none of their tunes were the least bit “novelty.” These are all hard-blowing early good-time trad jazz played by bands who understood the formulations of W.C. Handy, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, and King Oliver, as well as the other sounds of Dixieland. Check out the wailing blues of the “Greasy Plate Stomp” by Trombone Red & His Blue Six, or the hard strut of “Deep Henderson” by Charlie Skeete, or even the killer “One ‘O Clock Blues,” by Joe Tibbs & His Connies Inn Orchestra. There is fine music galore here for any vintage jazz fan, and most of these cuts have never seen the light of day on CD before. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Bud Hicks – Scat, Tuba; Frankie Trumbauer – Sax (C-Melody); Bill Brown Jr. – Tuba; Cliff Jackson & His Crazy Cats – Cymbals, Piano; Cyrus St. Clair – Tuba; Ed Allen – Cornet; Elmer Snowden – Banjo; Fred Guy – Banjo; Joe Craig Jones – Banjo; Leroy Harris – Banjo; Andy Secrest – Trumpet; Bill Airey Smith – Drums; Bill Rank – Trombone; Charles Strickfaden – Sax (Alto), Sax (Baritone); Charlie Gaines – Trumpet; Charlie Margulis – Trumpet; Clarence Grimes – Clarinet, Sax (Soprano), Sax (Alto); Dan Minor – |

Rare Wood $11.98 After loads of self-issued CD-Rs, LPs, and other gee gaws, Rare Wood is the first officially released compact disc by Sunburned Hand of the Man. Strangely, rather than be a single gig experience like many of their other recordings, Rare Wood has the distinction of compiling five performances: two of them were recorded live on the radio for KDVS at the University of California, David, two others were recorded in the Netherlands, and a final one in the home of Tony Goddess in Gloucester MA, all between 2002 and 2003. This was a period in which the band was traveling around the world bringing their brand of subsonic psychedelic tribal primitivism to stages and radio stations. The titles hardly matter, because the way this collection is sequenced it feels more like a SHotM concert. Basses, guitars, un- or at least de-tuned guitars, synths, loops, drums and other percussion instruments weave around shouted all but unintelligible voices howling, growling, screaming, moaning and sometimes chanting. Only 42 minutes in length, it is also short for the group, who were joined by Chris Corsano on at least some of these performances. While nothing here is unlistenable, Rare Wood remains the least satisfying of the truly energetic freak folk craziness issued on LP or elsewhere. It feels like they were getting the improvisation system down here, but hadn’t quite gotten to the point of being able to keep an audience intrigued for the length of a single gig. This one drags a bit, but there is still plenty to keep one interested. The difference is, you have to be allowed to be seduced by Rare Wood; unlike their other records, which are tension creators, this one merely meanders on the fringes without ever letting its full, heart aesthetic into the grooves. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

The Rare Breed $7 Andrew V. McLaglen directs the Western drama The Rare Breed, based on the real-life introduction of English Hereford cattle to the American West in the 1880s. Maureen O’Hara plays Martha Price, an widowed Englishwoman who convinces rancher Alexander Bowen (Brian Keith) to use her new cattle breed. James Stewart stars as ranch hand Sam Burnett, a rambler who agrees to take the rare bull to Texas in order to breed it with the longhorns. He also accepts a bribe along the way from the lawless Taylor (Alan Caillou). The determined Martha and her daughter Hilary (Juliet Mills) demand to go along for the trip, leading to Burnett having to rescue them from several bouts of Western-style danger. Soon Bowen loses faith in the breeding idea, but Burnett has grown to believe in the bull. The bull dies after the harsh winter, but Burnett saves one of its calves. He and Martha decide to start their own cattle ranch. Meanwhile, Hilary begins a romance with Bowen’s son Jamie (Don Galloway). Also starring Jack Elam as swindler Deke Simons. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi |

Rare and Unissued $15.98 U.K. garage rock mavens the Prisoners had only recently given up the ghost when kindred spirit Billy Childish assembled a collection of demos, live recordings, and outtakes from their archives for his Hangman Records label in 1988. Fully 20 years on, Big Beat has brought Rare and Unissued to CD in expanded form, and while two songs have been trimmed from the set list (“Happiness for Once” and “Pop Star Party” having been added as bonus tracks to Big Beat’s reissue of In from the Cold), ten more have been added, so the new version of Rare and Unissued weighs in at an impressive 22 tracks. While plenty of garage rock revival acts of the ’80s seemed to embrace the notion of “the cruder the better,” the Prisoners thankfully were unafraid to be tuneful, and in the grand tradition of British beat they absorbed an eclectic variety of influences (including R&B, psychedelia, and American garage snazziness) and held them all together with tight and powerful guitar interplay. (According to Dean Rudland’s liner notes, this makes the Prisoners an important precursor to Brit-pop, but please don’t hold that against them.) The live versions of “Coming Home,” “Deceiving Eye,” and “Come to the Mushroom” confirm that the Prisoners were a dynamite live act, “Joe 90 Theme” and “Revenge of the Cyberman” show they had a witty way with an instrumental, and their version of “Hush” rescues the tune from Deep Purple once and for all. And “Looking for You,” “Ain’t No Telling,” “Love Me Lies,” and “Mourn My Health” are simply great tunes that deserve to be heard. Big Beat has cleaned up the sometimes dodgy audio from the original release (though the live recordings from Switzerland are still less than hi-fi), and while Rare and Unissued is a solid set of odds and sods for devoted fans, the broad range of material makes this a better than expected introduction to a fine, underappreciated band. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Rare Elements $11.98 Some electronica enthusiasts will tell you that a recording isn’t really electronica unless everything is programmed from start to finish, but such thinking is dogmatic. Truth be told, electronica can still be electronica even if it incorporates acoustic instruments — and artists who aren’t really part of electronica per se can be used for electronica purposes if the right mixologist is involved. That’s what happens on Rare Elements, which finds ten different remixers turning their attention to the recordings of Turkish multi-instrumentalist Omar Faruk Tekbilek. Although Tekbilek’s contemporary Middle Eastern/Turkish/Sufi music isn’t electronica per se, it certainly acquires a lot of electronica appeal on Rare Elements. Remixers like Joe Claussell, Tommie Sunshine, Junior Sanchez, and Cheb i Sabbah approach Tekbilek’s work as club/dance music — and in most cases, the remixers successfully give him electronica makeovers without making him sound any less Middle Eastern. Electronic club/dance beats and Tekbilek’s traditional acoustic instruments (including the Turkish ney) have no problem coexisting on these remixes; Rare Elements demonstrates that electronica can, in fact, incorporate acoustic instruments and still sound like electronica. Of course, what one hears on Rare Elements doesn’t reflect the exact visions that Tekbilek originally had for these songs; remixes, by their very nature, are about interpretation rather than emulation. And some of Tekbilek’s fans — at least the ones who don’t have a taste for clubland electronica — will no doubt want to stick to the original versions. But for Tekbilek fans who do appreciate clubland electronica, Rare Elements is worth hearing. This 2009 release isn’t among Tekbilek’s essential albums, but it is intriguing more often than not and shows that there is no reason why world music and electronica cannot be allies. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Hasan Isakkut – Kanun; Joe Claussell – Clay Drums, Percussion; Omar Faruk Tekbilek – Def, Kaval, Davul, Baglama, Zurna, Bendir, Jura, Kavala, Finger Cymbals, Oud, Ney, Darbouka, Vocals; Abdullah Hashemite – Bells; Daniel Moreno – Talking Drum, Gong, Conga; Brian John Mitchell – Keyboards, Piano; Brian Mitchell – Keyboards, Piano |

Live & Rare $7.17 Usually a live and rare compilation can have a few underlying possibilities for motive: a quick and amicable contractual fulfillment before label and band part ways, a stopgap to release something new for fans in between albums, or a simple compilation to appease a die-hard fan base with cult-like tendencies. Hedging bets, this Korn compilation serves two of those three purposes right off the bat. It’s been a while since the group offered something new, and to appease the loyalists who would very well purchase a disc of Jonathan Davis bagpiping English football anthems, Korn had the good sense to compile a disc that’s one-half a live recording of their greatest hits and one-half an assortment of rare stuff and cover songs. Recorded in 2003 at CBGB’s, Live and Rare is exactly what you’d expect from the band, and for fanatics that’s a wonderful thing. But this could also easily serve as a catch-up guide for those who never really were into Korn, but need a place to hear some of their most well-known anthems. Covers of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall, Pts, 1, 2, 3,” Metallica’s “One,” and a hysterical take on “Earache My Eye” round things up and find the band having fun performing covers, much like Metallica’s now legendary Garage sessions. Collectors might already have all of this stuff scattered over several discs, but having them remastered and all in one place makes this an attractive disc to add to the collection. It should properly pacify rabid fans until the next full-length comes around, or until that disc of bagpipe anthems finally hits the stores. ~ Rob Theakston, Rovi Performers: Jonathan Davis – Bagpipes, Vocals; Brian Welch – Guitar; David Silveria – Drums; James “Munky” Shaffer – Guitar |

The Rare And The Beautiful $9.29 Like the better-known Mitfords the Garman sisters took center stage in Bohemian London during the first half of the twentieth century. Beautiful flamboyant and headstrong they broke away from middle-class conventions seducing and inspiring a generation of artists. Kathleen an enigmatic artist’s model and aspiring pianist was the lover and later wife of controversial American-born sculptor Jacob Epstein. Mary married the maverick poet Roy Campbell whose verse attack on the Bloomsbury group following Mary’s affair with Vita Sackville-West was the literary scandal of the epoch. Lorna the youngest and most beautiful of the sisters was the lover of both the painter Lucian Freud and the poet Laurie Lee. The Rare and the Beautiful offers the first portrait of a beguiling band of eccentric siblings who possessed an uncanny ability to turn heads break hearts and spark creative genius. Set against the exciting backdrop of London’s decadent subculture it evokes their extraordinary milieu of high culture drama and scandal. |

Rare Trax $10.38 As the name implies, Rare Trax is a compilation of hard-to-find tracks from the distant Meshuggah past. Included with a digital reawakening of the band’s limited-to-1,000-vinyl-LPs debut (known as Psykisk Testbild even though it was technically eponymous) are demo cuts culled from throughout the band’s history. It is interesting how the likes of “Sovereigns Morbidity” have an Exodus-like quality to them, especially since the band has since left such influences behind, and the self-effacing self-penned liner notes are amusing. However, Meshuggah has progressed to a much different (dare say, better) place over the years, and like most odds-and-sods comps, Rare Trax is best saved for nostalgic completists. ~ Brian O’Neill, Rovi Performers: Fredrik Thordendal – Bass, Vocals, Guitar; Gustaf Hielm – Bass; Jens Kidman – Guitar, Vocals; Jocke Skog – Guitar; Mårten Hagström – Guitar; Peter Nordin – Bass |

Rare and Glorious $13.58 Rare and Glorious draws from the archives of Saregama, Ravi Shankar’s longtime Indian record label, to compile a two-CD set of eight ragas with a total running time of 135 minutes; the tracks range across Shankar’s career, with the earliest one, “Raga Hansadhwani,” having been first released in 1962, and the most recent one, “Raga Shudh Kalyan,” in 1988. Shankar’s frequent accompanists, tabla players Ali Akbar Khan and Alla Rakha, are present frequently, although certain tracks are performed without percussion. Five of the tracks run 19 minutes or more in length, allowing Shankar time to explore the themes and gradually develop the dynamics of a complete raga. The sitar player was already over 40 when the first of these recordings was made, so he is heard as a mature musician practicing his art in full flower. This kind of music is not really susceptible to a “greatest-hits” selection, but many of these tracks are notable not only for the accomplished playing but also for their return to availability on this release, since they previously only appeared on long out of print LPs. Thus, the album justifies the words of its title, containing music that is both “glorious” and “rare.” ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi Performers: Ali Akbar Khan – Sarod; Alla Rakha – Tabla; Ashish Kumar – Tamboura; Kanai Dutt – Tabla; Nodu C. Mullick – Tamboura; Prodyot Sen – Tamboura; Ravi Shankar – Sarod |

Rare Masters $23.98 At the time Rare Masters was released in 1992, most of the selections on this 37-track double-disc compilation were indeed rare. They were issued on non-LP singles, B-sides, the Friends soundtrack, one-offs; some were buried on album tracks, and some even stayed in the vault. Since then, Elton John’s catalog has been remastered and reissued, with much of the best of this material appearing as bonus tracks, but the album still was worthwhile, since it not only has some songs that never appeared elsewhere on disc (such as “Step Into Christmas”‘ B-side, “(Ho Ho Ho) Who’d Be a Turkey at Christmas”), but it also is a hell of a listen in its own right, showcasing great songs and forgotten gems from John’s prime period. There aren’t too many hits here, but the quality is startlingly high and consistent, showcasing John and Taupin’s partnership at its peak — though they might not have hit the charts, “Bad Side of the Moon,” “Rock & Roll Madonna,” “Into the Old Man’s Shoes,” “Whenever You’re Ready (We’ll Go Steady Again),” “Screw You (Young Man’s Blues),” and the radio staple “Madman Across the Water,” plus “Grey Seal” (later re-recorded for Goodbye Yellow Brick Road) are among the finest songs of the era, and they’re the linchpins on a rarities collection, not a proper album. It doesn’t quite keep that same high level throughout, largely due to the pleasant but forgettable instrumentals from Friends, but it’s still an essential part of any Elton John collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Elton John – Keyboards, Vocals, Piano |

Medium Rare $7.98 Between 1985 and 2003, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones were one of Boston’s most prolific and beloved bands, as well as the pioneering force in what would eventually become known as the third-wave ska scene of the 1990s. Medium Rare is a collection of B-sides from their later years, along with three new songs recorded in 2007 in anticipation of a set of hometown reunion shows that December. The one outlier is a 1994 B-side, “Chocolate Pudding,” with vocals by trombonist Johnny Vegas, with the rest of the material covering the years 1997 to 2001, when the Bosstones were at their highest period of commercial visibility thanks to hits like “The Impression That I Get.” By this point in the band’s career, all of the rough edges and hardcore punk influences of their early years (bassist Joe Gittleman was formerly of Boston skate punk heroes Gang Green, and the band originally formed in the midst of Boston’s hardcore scene) are long gone, so songs like “Who’s Fooling Who?” and “To California” are as poppy and polished as the band’s A-side material from this era. Clearly, the Bosstones were not a band that held to the theory that B-sides were the place for bizarre experiments or stylistic changeups, because any of these songs would have fit comfortably on albums like Let’s Face It or Pay Attention. The three 2007 recordings are, surprisingly, a bit punkier and a lot more rough-edged: even the tribute to a late ska hero, “Don’t Worry Desmond Dekker,” dials back the horn section and the skanking rhythms in favor of distorted, upfront guitars, and “The List” and “The One with the Woes All Over It” hark back to the tougher approach of the band’s early albums on the local Taang! label. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones have announced that these recordings and the December 2007 live shows are the band’s last stand, which is probably for the best; for one thing, the new songs reveal that frontman Dicky Barrett’s voice, although never a thing of beauty, is pretty close to shot. Medium Rare is a nice parting gift to the faithful, but further reunions would likely only sully the brand. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi |

Rare Birds $9.59 Iceland-born Canadian filmmaker Sturla Gunnarsson spins this offbeat comedy about fine food and feathered friends. The owner of a failing gourmet eatery in a small Newfoundland town, Dave Purcell (William Hurt) is about to throw in the towel. As he raids his wine cellar and nurses his sorrows, his wacky friend Alphonse Murphy (Andy Jones) hatches a scheme to save the restaurant. They announce a faked sighting of a rare bird in the restaurant’s vicinity, and soon bird watchers and even celebrities are pouring into the establishment. Dave’s restaurant is so busy, in fact, that he hires Alphonse’s shapely sister-in-law, Alice (Molly Parker), and in less time than it takes to burn a souffle, romantic sparks are flying between the two. Unfortunately, Alphonse’s schemes aren’t limited to ornithological fraud. He has some hackneyed plan involving a submarine and a pile of cocaine that could bring down all that Dave has built. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi |
